How To Start And Maintain A Spiritual Fire

Fire for God

If you do a Google search on how to start a fire, you will find that the process is straight forward. First you need an ignition source to create the fire and some tinder to ignite. Tinder catches fire easily, but it goes out quickly, so you will soon need some kindling to keep the flame alive. To sustain a fire for a long time , you will need a steady supply of fuel and a fire pit that is dry and protected from elements that could extinguish it. Our relationship with God is like a fire. It is something to enjoy, and critical for life. Here are some basic instructions for how to start and maintain a spiritual fire;

  • Starting the Flame
The flame is our souls begin when you are saved, God Himself is the ignition source and we allow the fire to ignite when we confess Jesus as Lord by believing Jesus’ sacrifice for our Salvation. The moment we do that a flame a will go out. To keep it burning, it must be built up and fueled consistently. This is ‘stoking’ - adding fuel to fire to increase its size or strength. We stroke the fire started at salvation by building a stronger relationship with God. One way to do this is by  experiencing sanctification.

Like salvation, sanctification is an experience that happens in an instant. When we set our lives apart for God to use, He will cleanse us of the sinful nature we are born with, leaving us with a nature that is pure and holy like His. When we do this, our fire is growing. We stoke the fire more by experiencing the baptism or infilling of the Holy Ghost. When we are baptized, we are filled with His power which helps us effective witness for Him. Church attendance, regularly reading the word of God and seeking Him in prayer is a of great importance. These  are spiritual fuel.

  • Protecting the Fire
When sufficient fuel is provided,  there are forces that can cause the fire to go out. Natural elements like wind and rain can put out a blazing fire. Therefore, there must be barriers to counter these oppositions; challenges or attacks. God is with us and has promised to provide a way to withstand temptation (Read 1 Corinthians 10:13)

Our faith is also a barrier. Ephesians 6:16, tells us our faith is a shield that can quench all fiery darts of the the wicked. If we keep believing and trusting God the enemy's attack cannot harm us. Romans 10:17 says, faith comes by hearing the word of God. God's word can help in wilderness, when the enemy came to tempt Him. Therefore read the word of God regularly.

  • Spreading the Fire
In the natural, fire can spread. So also, being on fire for God can spread to others around us. When we witness to our relatives, acquaintances and strangers - anyone who listens, the result is that they would be saved, sanctified and baptized. Even Jeremiah found it difficult to preach the gospel after he was mocked, imprisoned and hated, but he found that God's message was a burning fire, shut up his bones and he could not stop ( Jeremiah 20:9)

  • Escape the Fire
The Bible tells us about different type of fire that we need to be aware of. For those who reject God's word , there is a lake of fire for them in the eternity. We are living in the last days and we must make sure we have God's fire burning, so it will take effort , but it is not a complicated to do. With God's help each of us can have a fire started and going till He calls us home. Shalom!
